Woodworking projects for beginners: Make a DIY Chisel Rack

This project uses standard size timber that you can buy from most hardware stores so no milling required. Learn Woodworking and make this easy DIY Chisel Rack, ideal beginners woodworking project and handy for the experienced woodworker to work with their hand tools.

I love this little thing as it allows me to take my favorite chisels to where I am working and not have them rolling around on a bench.

Step 1: Work out the Size of the Chisel Rack

First thing you want to do is layout your woodworking chisels that you want to put in the rack. Have them spaced out a little bit we will probably go about 34cm, you want to allow for space on the end as well so it doesn’t hit the sides.

Step 2: Cut the Rails, Post and Spacer Blocks

For the rails I use 42mm x 19mm wood from the hardware store. I setup a stop block on my cross cut sled and cut 4 of these out about 35cm long. Remember if you don’t have a table saw or crosscut sled you can just use a mitre box and a hand saw.

In between the chisels I’m going to use like a one inch spacer block so we will just move another stop block on the table saw sled.

When cutting skinny little parts like this i’ll use a little stick to just hold it down so it doesn’t get trapped and come fly out at me.

You need 2 post about 190mm or 7.5 inches long roughly, you can make it longer or shorter depending on the chisels you are using. The width of the pieces can be around 100mm but its not critical just what you can easily source or pull out of the scrap bin.

Step 3: Make it Smooth

To avoid sanding i used a Veritas low angle Jack Plane to smooth over all the pieces and leave a shiny smooth finish.

Step 4: Glue up the Top and Bottom Rail

Veritas Chisels layout

Veritas Chisels layout

First i laid out my chisels to roughly how i want them roughly and used a little spacer block in between just to set the distances so there all pretty even.

The Bottom rail just needs on space on either end and the top can be how many you like for your chisels.

I then glued and clamped up the pieces as in the photos been careful to keep everything flush, but it’s not critical as we can clean it up later with the hand plane if you get any movement.

Step 5: Clean up the Top and Bottom Rails

Now I just want to get top surface and bottom surface dead flat so its all nice and clean looking, to do that I’m just going to use the hand plane again which is the Veritas Low Angle Jack Plane which I really love if you don’t have a plane you can just use sandpaper and a sanding block that will do the same thing as well.

Step 6: Glue Up

Clamp up DIY Chisel Rack

Because I’m gluing end grain what I’m going to do it rub some glue right into the ends because if you think of end grain like as like straws so it’s going to absorb much more glue than the face grain so we will just work a bit in there but I’ve got a pretty decent surface area for the size of the project so it will hold it no problems at all.

Then i just clamped it up overnight to dry.

Block Plane end grain

Step 7: Finishing Touches

I took the clamps off and just used a block plane to get the ends level with the rails.

I then applied a couple of coats of Minwax wipe on poly.

Step 8: Ta da the Finished product

And here is the finished product. If you enjoyed this please follow me on social media and subscribe to my YouTube Channel.

Build a Lathe tool rack for your woodturning tools, this woodworking project is also an easy beginner’s project and solves your lathe tool storage problems.

In this woodworking video I’m going to teach you how to build a practical lathe chisel storage rack, we will go through how to cut the pieces of MDF on a table saw and how to lay them out as well as some practical tips on spray painting your woodworking projects.

This rack holds 22 woodturning chisels in a small box that is easily moved around the workshop, you could also use French cleats to stick it to the wall when not in use.
Also a big thanks to everyone for helping us reach our 10,000 subscriber mark, it’s really very exciting for me to get there.

Woodworking Projects How to Make a Moxon Vise on the Cheap

How to Make a Moxon Vise on the Cheap, in this Woodworking project video we are going to learn how to build a Moxson Vise, this project would also be easy for a beginner in woodworking to make.

We will go through the steps to build the Moxson Vise and as well as learn some woodworking techniques like using a chisel.

 [huge_it_gallery id=”4″]

Below is a transcript of the woodworking video

0:00 Todays Woodworking project is this cheap and easy Moxon bench vise that you can knock out in no time at all.

Todays woodworking project is this moxon style bench vise this is a great little vise pretty cheap to make it cost me $27 – $28 for all the parts not including the wood for the wood I just used some hardwood I had lying around some Australian Brush box but you could use anything just get some plywood laminate it together it will cost you nothing even just some 2″ x 6″ boards would be fine as well there a couple of little cheap options its better than selling your kidney for those standard moxon vice bench vise kits that you get around the place nice little simple handles that you can turn on pretty fast its quiet sturdy when something is in there its staying in there so I’m quiet happy with this little project.

All you need for this project is some wood some washers some bolts some nuts and some threaded rod.

The piece of wood I have picked it does have a cup in it so what I’m going to do is use my hand plane just to get it out.

I’m just going to use a Grr-ripper and a Grr-rip block if you haven’t seen a grip block these are another product from Microjig they have these little drop down feet so when you push it down they drop on and catch the wood and push it through make life nice and easy for you and nice and safe so you get to keep your fingers.

For the bolts I am using 3/4″ threaded rod so I’ve drilled the hole there but I haven’t gone all the way through what I’m going to do is just use the point of the forstner bit and just to finish all the way through and then I’m going to come at it from the other side with a bigger forstner bit which is going to mount the bolt that will bind these 2 together

Now I’ve drilled out the holes so what were going to do just get our threaded rod with the bolt on the end and drop it through and you can see it just sits a little bit larger than the hole so all we will do is trace around it.

Using a really sharp chisel I’m just going to go around and widen this hole.

I’m just going to use my trusty little Veritas low angle block plane and I’m just going to take the corners off all the inside bits on the vise just like in case there is a little bit of racking or something like that when I clamp the vise I’m not going to get dents in my wood.

For the handles what I’ve done is got the treaded rod and a friend to weld the nut on to the end of it so we can use that the same as we did in the back of the vise so I will just chisel it out and this will become the handle.

So I cut these out with the saw and then just did a bit of shaping on the disk sander so up with a just a nice simple shape that I like I’ve just drilled a 3/4″ hole here for a piece of dowel which will suit as our handle.

Okay now all we got to do is epoxy the threaded rod into that so what I normally do is get some kitchen grease proof paper this is also handy if you want to wrap it around the bars on your clamps and things like that when your gluing up to stop mess its good you know does not stick to anything so glue come off easy its cheap to get rid of so all you do is you just you have a A and B part you mic these 2 together in equal parts I’ve gone for the 5 minute quick epoxy as well quick stir

Okay now I’m just going to apply a little bit of finish I wasn’t going to go to crazy with it what I was going to use was some of this woodsheen which is just a mixture of I think its beeswax and Tung oil just gives nice sort of lustre and I think it will look good on the front of the vise obviously you don’t put anything on the inside of the vise because you don’t want that transfer to your wood WOW that looks pretty good.

Don’t forget check us out on Facebook Google+ twitter anything like that follow the links down below I hope I’ve done enough to earn your subscription so and please send me comments I love it you make one of these love to see the photos feel free to post them on any of our social network pages.

Just like me this island style workbench is cheap and easy, Hi I’m Warren from One Wood and were going to be making this cheap island style workbench, this probably cost a little over $100 in materials and you can knock it out in a weekend

The joinery is nice and simple so a lot of the time your first project when you are a woodworker is a workbench, you might not need something as big as this probably half the size of this would do the job for most people this things got a fair amount of weight on it, its pretty big so lets hook into it.

First thing we need to do is cut 8 legs 800mm long ill setup my stop block so each cut will be exactly the same i dont have to worry about measuring each one.

for the joinery i am going to be using a Kreg HD pocket hole jig, this ones designed for using on larger lumber rather than the smaller pocket hole jigs they make its a pretty simple thing you just clamp it on clamp it on like so.

And where done 2 holes then we just get another little screw drive it in like that and all done.

to secure the top to the frame im going to use pocket holes using the normal kreg pocket hole jig.so well just put a few holes in along these pieces here.

next were going to use the table saw to cut some slots in the timbers for our little dividing wall the end were going to cut towards the end so if i want to clamp ive got a little bit of real estate for the centre dividers we will just cut down the middle, so adjust this in case im not exactly in the middle what were going to do put a little cross on the side that goes against the fence so if im a little bit out at least we will be a little bit out all in one direction.

now were read to start assembly, because we have used pocket holes this will come together really really quickly if you haven’t used a Kreg pocket hole jig before there highly recommended so all we need to do that you can see we have got our holes here we just need to clamp here clamp it together grab the screw and thats it and thats all we to do and thats a really strong joint that will last quiet well.

now who spotted what i did wrong there can you see it have a look can you see it let me show you i let the good rug get in the shot with my wood on it so i don’t scratch my wood dead man walking when the boss sees that.

um just for this workbench im building i just had trouble getting the legs perfectly square so what i did a whopping big hunk of triangle drilled a few holes in it cut some notches in it and its been able to hold things perfectly square for me all we do is just sit the leg where we want it line it up then just grab these little fence clamps they just go straight in the hole screw it in and thats perfectly square in this plane as well as this plane because its nice and thick it just there it doesn’t wobble or anything so its nice and easy to setup i think i will be using it quiet a bit and then i also cut a couple of notches so i can also you know clamp it for some extra support or if i’ve got to inset it theres a little bit more reach then we can just reach around the back knock it in and its done, what can we call it it needs a name the ultimate triangle of squareness that will do.

Im just going to add some soft feet so we slide it around on the floor just like a nylon thing that make it easier just need a T nut and thats it.

So I’ve made 2 boxes here so um with larger projects its normally easier to do it in like a modular design so if you even look at your kitchen cupboards and big things like that there just a series of little boxes and you put them all together so all done we’ve go 2 boxes and we will just put these in and screw the top on and we’ll be done in about 10 minutes.

You don’t have to use pocket holes to build this bench you can use use simple joinery like I’ve done with this bench here i built this years ago still going really strong its never moved and i don’t think it ever will all you do is just have your upright place your rail across there 4 screws just drill and the wood doesn’t split ad then for your side pieces just place that along there same again 4 screws and you can see you secured in lots of different spots and that will never move.

Okay the next thing is i’ve drawn a grid over the whole table which is 150mm spacings you can do whatever yo want that what i like and then were going to drill some 19mm holes the the dog holes push devices like this in clamp various things to the surface of the table makes your life very easy.

You ever hear that expression a good lure catches more fisherman then fish well for woodworkers its these things router bits i have more router bits than i know what to do with but um when you are first starting out you don’t need to many i think these three bits will get you through most of what ever you need to do and i probably still do 80% of what i do the first one is a um flush trim bit which use which has a little ball bearing there and this ball bearing will ride along a pattern or edge of a workbench and trim it flush with anything so its good if you are making patterns stuff like that. The next one is a chamfer bit which will just put a 45 degree chamfer around your edge and thats all you need for that one and then a round over bit which is the same sort of thing it will just put a round over edge across your workbench or whatever you are doing so I’m just going to use this to soften the edge of the workbench.

Thanks for watching and i hope we have done enough to earn your subscription so please subscribe to the links below we’ve also got free plans in sketchup form you can download i will put a link to that at the bottom of this page as well and if you want to learn more about sketch a great place to go is Jays Custom Creations check out his YouTube channel he’s got some good stuff lots to learn there and um for those of you don’t know us onewood.com.au is the Australian New Zealand distributor for Microjg so we got marvellous Microdials great Grr rippers magnificent Mj splitters and zzz and i don’t know something that rhymes with zero play thats really good um so you can go to onewood.com.au if you would like to purchase anything we would love that so stayed tuned please subscribe and we’ve got some more projects coming up thank you.

Hey there after last weeks laptop video i had a few people ask me what if i don’t have a router table how can i do it, well we can make one so we going to make one in 10 minutes for 10 bucks probably less than 10 dollars.

all we need is a piece of wood for the fence a wing nut and a bolt and a piece of wood that is going to sit as out table so to start with we just take off the base plate off your router

sit the base plate down on and then with a pencil trace the holes where the screws are going to go. just around the middle it doesn’t mater if its not exactly in the middle then where just going to drill out our holes and then with a forstner bit we are just going to widen the hole a little bit

okay i have found the center and now I’m just going to use a forstner bit to drill out the hole that the router bit will come through.

okay now we have drilled out holes to mount the router and now its time to mount the fence I’m just using a small bit of wood i used something like this for years and i was quiet happy with it you can do more complex things if you need to do something a bit higher you can do a right angle type fence just for this quick little exercise we going to use this this is fine if you are just doing corners or template routing or whatever we will just drill out our holes for that.

okay now were going to quickly mount the fence just going to thread the bolt though from the underside. fence on wing nut it doesn’t have to be super tight just so it sits there firmly not to mount the router were just going to drop the screw into the hole.

i have just used the original screws from the router base plate and made a really deep hole with the Forstner bit ideally you would probably want to to get some longer bolts.

And that’s it simple as I’ve got my adjustable fence the router is mounted to the bottom now to use all you can do is clamp it to the bench or you can clamp it to a couple of saw horses and take it out on site for this one i will clamp it straight on to the bench here. 2 clamps should be enough normally and then to set the fence all we do is bang a clamp on there and then we just run whatever we want along there you know cut a dado a dado with that this ones even adjustable. so i can wind my router bit up and down quiet easily without having to fiddle around underneath all done and that will work pretty well.

Okay lets give it a quick test out just got a simple cut setup here just dado on this little piece of wood so we will pop our safety equipment on and give it a cut

now you can do a few little modifications to this thing to make it work a little bit better for you you can do a bigger fence nothing hard there just a couple of right angle with some reinforcing on the side so if you want a bit of height another thing i used to do is i have this little device so if I’m cutting finger joints you can see where i have plowed through already and then i can just run it through adjust the fence move it over and that used to work pretty well for me.

bada boom bada bing you can make this for under $10 in 10 or 15 minutes i hope you like this quick little project and go and make it now you have go no excuse not to make that laptop table we made last week so click here to go and check out that video or if you learn how to make a wood workbench with a Kreg HD pocket jig click here i hope we have done enough to get your subscription so check out those videos and then go do something. shoo why are you still here go cut something go cut something some wood not yourself.
